Sunday Times Editorial Photography

Here is fairly typical “case study” editorial photography for The Sunday Times shot in Yorkshire. This one was a story on first time buyers and the state of the housing market. This couple had managed to buy their first home where most fail. Often these jobs are shot at short notice with the hope of being the front page picture which means shooting the right shape for both printed and tablet editions. Of course the weather will do whatever it wants and the direction a building faces can also add difficulties. With this shot the challenge was too much light. When this bright even the most powerful of speedlite flashes struggle to fill in the harsh shadows of direct sunlight so some really powerful flash is required. This has a 600W studio head with large reflector positioned to the couple’s right and the sensitivity was fixed to my camera’s lowest setting; 50 IS0. As you can see, this one made the front.
