Here is a six page spread I wrote for Amateur Photographer as published in last week’s issue. It’s a technique piece on food photography and I’m very pleased to see it used so well. I really must get a new mug shot done. Click on the link below for the full feature.
I was spending New Year’s Eve in Scotland in a house by the beach when I noticed the occasional person walking past staring out to see. Eventually I realised they were trying to spot the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). As midnight approached it became stronger so I grabbed the camera and took this of my son Ollie. On this occasion I had no tripod as was on holiday travelling light so I borrowed my wife’s foil-wrapped banana loaf and rested the lens on it for the 30 second exposures. Using a 2 sec self timer reduced movement further. Banana loaf tasted great too.

Last week I spent a day at Britain’s last deep coal mine scheduled to close next month. Here is my short photo essay from Kellingley Colliery and published in The Sunday Times last weekend. Here is my portrait of Enid Bakewell, one of England’s most successful lady cricketers and still playing at 75 years old. Here, Enid is trying out her brand new bat in her back garden near Mansfield just after giving me a cup of tea and piece of ginger cake and just prior to dashing off to play bowls. Last week she was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Sportswomen of the Year Awards. The picture was published yesterday in The Sunday Times, a sponsor of the awards.

Here are some pictures from Louise & Adam’s wedding at her family’s home near Cambridge. The stubborn rain eventually cleared so the pictures go from brollies to evening sunshine. Almost every wedding I have photographed this summer has had similar weather and I’ve lost count of the number of umbrellas I have left behind. A particular talking point was the flowers which were truly exceptional courtesy of Louise’s friend Kate at katealbandavies.com
